She and her three siblings were born in Lake Oswego, Oregon, to william Walter Gallagher, Sr. and Darrilyn Doris Stenz. She was raised in a Catholic household; after spending years as an atheist, she returned to the Catholic faith.
She was inspired by the work of Ayn Rand.
