She began singing at nine and by sixteen was performing in church choirs and writing songs for others.
A feminist activist, she has spoken as an ambassador for the ONE Campaign.
Her parents were members of the clergy and she has two older brothers. Some of her childhood was spent in Benin City, Nigeria while her parents did missionary work.
Vanessa Mdee joined her in creating the single "Strong Girl" in 2015 to empower women around the world.
