Professional soccer coach and former player who is widely recognized for serving as the manager of Sunderland. During his pro career he played for Middlesbrough, Celtic and Ipswich Town as a defender.
He played his first professional match with Middlesbrough in 1982.
As a coach he began his career as a first team coach at Ipswich Town. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion in 2006, where he won the Football League Championship in 2008. He was later appointed as manager of Celtic but was only in the position for nine months.
