Taina Elg is a celebrated Finnish actress and dancer who was born in 1930 in Helsinki. Her family moved around Finland and was forced to evacuate during the Finnish-Soviet wars. She trained in ballet and acting from a young age and eventually joined the Finnish National Ballet. Her international reputation grew when she joined the Sadler's Wells ballet dance company and the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas. After being discovered in London by an American film producer, she was signed to a seven-year Hollywood contract with MGM. She starred in films such as The Prodigal, Diane, Gaby, Les Girls, Imitation General, The 39 Steps, Watusi, and Mission of Danger. She later focused on TV projects, foreign films, and theatre roles, appearing in productions such as Redhead, Silk Stockings, Irma La Douce, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, and Look to the Lilies. In 2004, she was honored with a special award from Finland, the Order of the Lion of Finland. She is the mother of jazz guitarist Raoul Björkenheim and was married to Italian educator Rocco Caporale until his death in 2008.
