After teaming up with DJ King Tech, he went on to release a few independent albums, and then the duo signed with Giant Records. They released their first album in 1990. It proved popular enough for them to be offered their own radio show. "The Wake Up Show" became quite popular in the Bay area, and eventually was simulcast to Los Angeles and Chicago. The popularity of the show led to a new record deal with Interscope Records and a #1 Hip Hop/R&B album. In 2000, he became a correspondent for MTV News. He debated leaving MTV in 2005, but subsequently signed a new contract with the network that allowed him to develop programming. Since 2011 he has hosted a morning radio show on the Sirius/XM channel, Shade 45.
