Known for his bestselling biography of the Welsh band Manic Street Preachers, released in 1999 and entitled Everything, he also became known for writing a music review column in The Independent on Sundays.
After studying philosophy and French at University College London, he was hired as a music critic by Barry & District News. He subsequently spent nearly a decade working for a music journal called Melody Maker.
He closely associated himself with a 1990s United Kingdom glam and pop music movement known as Romantic Modernism ("Romo").
He grew up near Cardiff, Wales, in the Vale of Glamorgan town of Barry.
