Author and Catholic priest who, along with 18 other Catholic academics and clergymen, famously signed an open letter to world bishops accusing Pope Francis of heresy in 2019. He is widely known for his publications about Swiss theologian and Catholic priest Hans Urs von Balthasar, on whom 3 of his books are based. He has also written numerous additional works on theological history and religion, including A Spirituality for the Twenty First Century and The Art of God Incarnate: Theology and Image in Christian Tradition.
He earned a degree in modern history from Christ Church in Oxford, graduating with first-class honors. After entering the Dominican Order in 1970, he was ordained to the priesthood at Blackfriars. He then relocated to Edinburgh, where he attended and served as a chaplain at the University of Edinburgh, earning his doctorate in 1986.
In 1990, he was awarded the Licentiate of Sacred Theology degree from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, where he had previously served as Lecturer in Dogmatics and Ecumenics. He was also awarded a Master of Sacred Theology degree by the 2003 master of the Dominican Order of Preachers.
He lives in the Priory of St. Michael the Archangel in Cambridge, England, as a member of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans).
Many of his books explore the papal supremacy of Catholic leaders such as Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Pius XII.
