He entered the navy while pursuing his studies, and after graduation spent time in survey and combat missions.
His first expedition was to find out the extent of Russian and British encroachment in the Pacific North West.
He was born into Spain's noble Navarrese family.
He was one of the first explorers of Alaska, similarly to his American counterpart Wilds P. Richardson .
