The sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989 who took office after the assassination of his mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was the youngest Indian premier and he was known for his dismantling of government quotas, tariffs and permit regulations on economic activity before being assassinated in 1991.
He was a professional pilot for Indian Airlines while his mother, Indira Gandhi, served as Prime Minister.
He became the youngest Prime Minister in the history of India at age 40 after taking power following his mother's assassination.
