Afghan military leader and founder of the Taliban who served as the supreme leader of Afghanistan during the 1996-2001 reign of the Taliban. His rule over Afghanistan was brought to an end after the United States invaded the country and began fighting against the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
His first time serving in a military role came during the war between the Soviet Union and the Afghan mujahideen, which began in 1979.
He founded the Taliban during the post-Soviet era civil war in response to practices that had become normalized throughout the country over time in an effort to bring the country back into what he and others believed was acceptable to Allah.
He was born and raised in the Kandahar region of Afghanistan. Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security announced his passing due to tuberculosis on July 29, 2015, though several officials and groups questioned the validity of the claims of his death. Akhtar Mansoor was chosen as his successor as leader of the Taliban.
Afghanistan was invaded by America due to his unwillingness to turn in Osama bin Laden, whom he was closely affiliated with.
