After serving in the army, he attended George Washington University before joining a local theatre group. He moved to New York and studied acting at the HB Studio before working at the Living Theater and starring in several off-Broadway plays. He then moved to California to begin his film career, appearing in over 50 feature films and countless television movies and series. He is also the director of the film Da (1988). Matt is the father of four children, all of whom are involved in the entertainment industry.
