Her full name is Mary Elizabeth Truss, but she has gone by Elizabeth since she was young. Her family moved to Scotland when she was four. She also spent a year in Canada. Her father is an emeritus professor of pure mathematics at the University of Leeds. Her mother was a nurse, teacher, and member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. They were both slightly left of center, politically. When she ran for Parliament as a Conservative, her mother campaigned for her but her father declined. In 2000, she married Hugh O'Leary, an accountant whom she first met at the 1997 Conservative Party Conference. They have two daughters.
She was an ardent advocate of Brexit and a fan of former PM Margaret Thatcher. She has the support of British politician Jacob Rees-Mogg and many others in the Conservative party.
