American politician who is a member of the Republican party and 54th Governor of Alabama. She began her term as Governor in 2017. She served as State Treasurer from 2003 to 2011 and lieutenant governor from 2011 to 2017.
She graduated from Auburn University and moved to California in 1967 to follow her first marriage and became a high school teacher. At the end of the marriage, she moved back to Alabama and was appointed by then-Governor Fob James to become a member of the state cabinet in 1979. She unsuccessfully ran to become state auditor as a Democrat in 1982.
She is the second female governor in Alabama history. At the age of 77, she is the oldest sitting governor. She was involved in a blackface skit while at Auburn University for which she later apologized.
