Icelandic politician who is best known for serving as the sixth president of Iceland. He took office in 2016.
In 1991, he earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science from the University of Warwick, in 1997, a Master of Arts in history from the University of Iceland and in 2003, he received a PhD in history from the University of London.
He was a professor at the University of Iceland before running for president in 2016. He was Iceland's youngest president at age 46.
He is the son of Jóhannes Sæmundsso and Margrét Thorlacius. He married Eliza Jean Reid in 2004. He was previously married to Elín Haraldsdóttir from 1995 to 1996. His children are Rut Guðnadóttir, Duncan Tindur, Edda Margrét, Donald Gunnar and Sæþór Peter.
He translated four works by Stephen King into Icelandic between 1992 and 1997.
