Christopher Columbus Kraft was born on February 28, 1924 in Virginia. He was a NASA engineer and flight director who was instrumental in organizing many Mission Control operations. He was responsible for the development of the mission control concept and the procedures used to manage the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. He was also the first flight director for the Apollo 11 mission, which was the first mission to land a man on the moon. Kraft was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 for his contributions to the space program.
