Notable for her role in initiating an important computer science movement known as the Mead & Conway revolution, this scientist and electrical Engineer is also famous for her activism on behalf of the transgender community.
After leaving the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the midst of her first (unsuccessful) male-to-female gender transition procedure, she enrolled at Columbia University and completed her bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering.
In the mid 1980s, she began teaching computer science and engineering at the University of Michigan.
She was born and raised in White Plains, New York, and she later settled in Michigan with her Engineer husband, Charlie.
She and Janet Mock are both prominent transgender Activists.
