Billy Blanks, Jr. began dancing when he was in elementary school. He was actually mentored by dancer/singer/actress/choreographer Paula Abdul. He went on to choreograph for school musicals, local productions, and dance groups before steady work in music videos and on musical tours pulled him away. He went on to dance in music videos for Paula Abdul, Madonna, and Babyface, and appeared on such television shows as "The Practice", "Sister, Sister", and "American Dreams". He also starred as Tyrone Jackson in the National Tour of "Fame". He became a household name after appearing on the reality show, "Shark Tank" in 2012. After receiving an offer on the show, Blanks initially declined. It wasn't until investor Daymond John tracked Billy down after the cameras stopped rolling that he was finally convinced to take a deal.
