His father, Harold Alfond, was a factory worker who never went to college, but was able to buy an old shoe factory and start the Norrwock Shoe Company, which he sold for $1 million in 1944. Fourteen years later, he bought an old mill in Dexter, Maine and turned it into the Dexter Shoe Company, which he sold to Warren Buffett in 1993 for a chunk of Berkshire Hathaway stock. The Alfonds have since made a fortune from the rising value of those shares, and Harold focused on philanthropy before his death in 2007. Bill and his two siblings are now billionaires, and the family owns a small stake in Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC, as well as stakes in Roush Fenway Racing and New England Sports Network.
