Founding member of the New York Knickerbockers BaseBall Club in the 1840s. He was an inductee of the Baseball Hall of Fame but was sometimes referred to as a "father of baseball."
He first worked at the age of 16 in 1836 as a clerk for a Wall Street broker, later doing clerical work at the Union Bank of New York.
He became a prominent citizen in Honolulu, serving as the city's first fire chief and as a trusted advisor to Queen Emma of Hawaii.
