In her early years, she aspired to be an opera singer; however, she turned to musical theater instead, beginning her career at age thirteen at Paris' famed Folies Bergere.
She appeared in a wildly popular 1926 stage musical based on the life of Composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Her marriage to Playwright Sacha Guitry ended in 1934. She subsequently became romantically involved with fellow actor Pierre Fresnay.
Her performance as Melanie in the 1934 London stage production of Noel Coward's Conversation Piece earned her much critical acclaim.
