The family owned company was founded by Maxwell Kohl, and was managed by members of the Kohl's family until 1979. In 1986, a group of investors, and the then current senior management of Kohl's, purchased the company from the British-American Tobacco Company's retail division, which at that point owned the majority of the chain. William Kellogg was one of those senior managers. He eventually became CEO. The store expanded from forty locations in Wisconsin, to a total of 1,067 locations in every state, except for Hawaii.
