Founding Father of the United States who represented the U.S. state of Georgia at the Constitutional Convention. He was one of the first United States Senators from Georgia, a post he held from 1789 to 1793.
He served in the Georgia provisional congress in 1776 and was one of the six state representatives selected to attend the Constitutional Convention.
Although he missed large portions of the debate at the Constitutional Convention, he still provided the crucial vote to declare independence.
His father moved from England to Maryland, where he came to be opposed to the royalists.
Like him, Pierce Butler, who represented South Carolina at the 1787 Constitutional Convention, was another signatory of the United States Constitution.
