Hayden is a native of Baton Rouge and spent six years in the US Marines. He grew up in a family of hunters and gun owners. His reality television series was called "Sons of Guns" and aired on the Discovery Channel. The series centered on Will and his daughter Stephanie.  Red Jacket Firearms manufactures and sell custom weapons. During his six years as a Marine, Will realized he needed to be his own boss and release his inner entrepreneurial spirit. The first business he owned was a small construction and commercial refrigeration company, but guns were what he loved. He decided to open a side business and remolded his building and opened an Army Surplus and Firearms Store. This side business grew quickly and became his full time focus.

Red Jacket officially opened in 1999, the first big order Hayden received was a contract for 20 AK-47s for an Arizona distributor. Red Jacket Firearms made a deal with the Arizona distributor in exchange for a cut rate on the price, and Will requested that his builds be listed as "Proudly Manufactured by Red Jacket" in advertisements by the purchaser. In April 2017, Will Hayden was convicted of raping two girls. One of the victims claims the assaults occurred repeatedly over a year and a half when she was between 11 and 12 years old. The second victim, who today is 37 years old, claims that Hayden raped her back in the early 90s when she was between 12 and 13. Hayden has denied all allegations. He faces a mandatory life sentence.
