While he was still pursuing his football career in the lower-ranked teams of Britain's soccer system, he was also working in the mailroom at the London offices of the American accounting firm, Arthur Andersen.
When he finally made the leap from Maidstone United to first division side Wimbledon in 1990, his £300,000 transfer fee was the largest sum paid for a Fourth Division player at the time.
When he moved over to Newcastle United in 1995, Barton again topped the financial charts, becoming the most expensive defender in English football for £4 million. He became part of manager Kevin Keegan's squad known as "The Entertainers."
