Nobel Prize-winning Physiologist who mapped the parts of the brain responsible for the control of different organs. In 1932, he received the Marcel Benoist Prize.
He studied Medicine at the University of Zurich and subsequently opened a private ophthalmology practice.
He served as Director of the University of Zurich's Physiological Institutefrom 1917 to 1951.
He married Louise Sandmeier, with whom he had a daughter, Gertrud, and a son, Rudolf.
He and fellow scientist Egas Moniz were dual recipients of the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Moniz was honored for his development of the now-infamous lobotomy procedure.
