He was a founding member of the group in 1959 and would eventually become the only member. In 1976 Butala purchased complete interest in the Lettermen name. They have released several albums over the years and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2012. The Lettermen have had many hit singles including "When I Fall in Love" which reached #1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart, "Hurt So Bad" which reached #1 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart, and the songs "The Way You Look Tonight", "Come Back Silly Girl", "Theme from A Summer Place", "I Only Have Eyes for You", and many more. He also owns Butala Vineyards.
