He is widely renown for being the mentor to designers on Bravo's Project Runway since the show's debut in 2004. Gunn joined Parsons The New School for Design in New York City in 1982, where he became associate dean seven years later. In 2000 he took over as the school's chair of the department of Fashion Design. Starting in 2004, Gunn was brought onto the fashion-based reality series Project Runway to mentor the designers in the competition. In 2007, he left Parsons to become the CEO of Liz Claiborne, Inc., a New York City- based fashion company that designs and markets a wide range of women's and men's apparel, accessories and fragrance products.
