Because he didn't have much money, his coach let him train for free in exchange for cleaning of the facility. In Brazil, he had a perfect 9-0 record during his first nine matches. Silva went on to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where his first match-up was against James Irvin at UFC 71. He had won his first match by TKO. His first televised debut was against Houston Alexander, whom he knocked out in the opening round. On May 28, 2011 Silva was slated to fight UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson at UFC 130. Instead the fight was cancelled and it was later released that Silva underwent a drug test and the findings appeared inconsistent with human urine. He publically admitted to using a urine adulterant.
