Folksinger and actor who starred as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Max Muller in the 1958 film The Defiant Ones.
He had to flee Palestine with his family as a child. Later, he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
He co-founded the Newport Folk Festival in 1959.
