An author and scholar, he was also heavily involved in Bangladeshi language activism. He edited the Arabic journal, Thaqafatul Hind, and also served as Secretary of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
In 1926, he became one of the first graduates of Visva-Bhrati University. He went on to receive his PhD from the University of Bonn.
He wrote over twenty books between the 1940s and the 1970s.
At the time of his death, he was married to Rabeya Khatun.
He and poet Ahmed Sofa are both well-known Bengali writers.
