Petrov began his civilian career as a mechanic in 1982 and became a director of a car leasing joint venture in the 1990s. In 2007, he was elected to the lower house of parliament. Petrov was the only Russian billionaire to sign a resolution calling for a peaceful end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which was published on Richard Branson's Virgin Group site.
