He competed in the U.S. National Junior Olympics in downhill and slalom skiing when he was 14, finishing 13th amongst 150 competitors.
He won his first NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the 2002 MBNA All-American Heroes 200 at Dover.
His brother Chris Wimmer also competed in the Busch Series.
He was a heavy contender to win the 2004 Daytona 500, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. earned the victory in the end.
