Inventor of the Colt revolver, which is commonly known as The Gun that Won the West. He was able to produce his guns, which used interchangeable parts, on a large scale due to his ability to employ an assembly line.
At age eleven he was indentured to a Glastonbury farmer, where he did chores and attended school.
His initial attempts into producing firearms were failures but his Business expanded rapidly after 1847, when the Texas Rangers ordered 1,000 revolvers during the American war with Mexico.
He married Elizabeth Hart Jarvis and he had a son named Cladwell Hart Colt.
He and Samuel Morse were friends.
