He won his first of 9 gold medals in various Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Grappling tournaments which included World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, ADCC World Championship, and Pan American Championships back in 1996.
He has written a number of instructional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu books, a couple of which he co-wrote with some of his family members.
He married and had four daughters with Vera Lucia Ribeiro.
He comes from a family of fighters including his cousin Ryan Gracie.
