Brazilian martial artist best recognized as the second son of Carlos Gracie. He was a 9th degree red belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, affording him the title of Grandmaster. He was also the president of the Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Rio de Janeiro.
In the 1950s, he began competing in Vale Tudo competitions. His début mixed martial arts fight was against Artur Emidio in April 1957.
In the 1960s, he worked as a bodyguard to Leonel Brizola, the brother-in-law of the then President of Brazil, João Goulart.
He learned martial arts from his father and his uncle Hélio Gracie. He was married to Vera Lucia and they have four children, Flavia, Renzo, Ryan, and Ralph Gracie.
His cousin is martial artist Royce Gracie.
