Notable for his participation in the 2011 Abbottabad raid that resulted in the killing of Taliban leader and international terrorist Osama bin Laden, this U.S. Navy SEAL claimed to have shot bin Laden in the head during the top secret operation.
Following his graduation from Butte Central Catholic High School, he began his military career, originally intending to become a U.S. Marine Corps sniper but ultimately joining the Navy SEALs instead.
After detailing his actions during the classified bin Laden compound raid, O'Neill was criticized by the U.S. military and subjected to a U.S. Department of Justice investigation.
He spent his childhood and teenage years in the copper mining town of Butte, Montana. In August 2017, he married Jessica Halpin.
O'Neill was involved in the 2005 military initiative -- Operation Red Wings -- that saved the life of his fellow Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell.
