He served in World War II and was a German Prisoner-of-War from 1942-1945. His 1975 work Two Men and a Blanket details his POW experience.
He worked as a teacher from 1945-1964.
He was the son of an Edinburgh music teacher, and he was married in 1942.
He was a literary contemporary of fellow Scottish poet Edwin Morgan.
