Famed musician who was a master of his century's music, but was also skilled on early keyboards and played with many Baroque ensembles.
He joined Pierre Boulez's Domaine musical concerts while in France during the early 1950s, and as a result, he was instrumental in bringing early 20th-century works to post-war Paris.
He debuted works by Frederic Rzewski.
His family noticed his skills early on, and he attended PS 95, DeWitt Clinton High School, and The Juilliard School.
He escaped a largely impoverished existence while in Europe, due in no small part to Aaron Copland's encouragement and connections.
