He was born Giuseppe Guttoveggio and was self-taught in music.
He was made an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity.
His wife Louise donated the Paul Creston Collection to the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
He was a noted music teacher who educated the likes of John Corigliano.
