He graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in mathematics and went on to study Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh.
During the 1990s, he served as president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.
He was born in Gloucestershire, England, and he later lived, taught, and researched in Illinois, New York, and Florida.
He collaborated with fellow Artificial Intelligence researcher John McCarthy on the creation of a seminal text in the A.I. field.
