Mathematician and scientist who worked on the turbine engines for the Ministry of Aircraft Production during World War II. After the war, he became head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College.
He attended Birkbeck College, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge.
In 1960, he became President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and became a Knight Bachelor in 1965.
He had three children with wife Marion McKechney. After her death, he married Daphne Holmes in 1981.
During World War II, he worked with scientist Frank Whittle.
