After graduating from the University of Durham with a First, he was offered a place at Cambridge to read for a doctorate in seismology, but instead chose to pursue a career in comedy. After appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe, he was spotted by a BBC producer and offered radio work. He has since appeared in numerous sitcoms, and in 2014 his persona of Mr Swallow attracted huge critical acclaim in a comic reworking of Dracula on stage. In 2017, he was similarly lauded for his portrayal of Harry Houdini in a show that transferred from Edinburgh to London's Soho theatre.

Mohammed was a cast member of BAFTA-nominated CBBC Sketch show Sorry, I've Got No Head and supported Angelos Epithemiou (as one of his radio show characters, Mr. Swallow) on his 2010 national tour.
