His original career goal was to play college football, but he changed his mind and started out singing backup vocals for Garth Brooks.
He received the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award in 2004.
He married his wife Lana, who he met while in college. His father was a member of the gospel music group, Thrasher Brothers.
He has written many songs for Kenny Chesney.
