What an amazing creature. The Gorilla Foundation announced the passing of their beloved Koko on Tuesday, June 19th, 2018 at the age of 46. Throughout her life, Koko's abilities made international headlines. She was chosen as an infant to work on a language research project with psychologist Francine "Penny" Patterson, and was coined the famous “sign language talking Gorilla.” In 2001, Koko made a fast friend in comedian Robin Williams. Years later, in 2014, Koko was one of many who mourned Williams' passing. Koko amazed scientists in 2012, when she showed she could learn to play the recorder. That alone revealed mental perspicacity but also that primates could learn to control their breathing — something that had been assumed to be beyond their abilities. Her ability to interact with people made Koko an international celebrity. But she also revealed the depth and strength of a gorilla's emotional life, sharing moments of glee and sadness with researchers. Rest in Peace, Koko. #Repost @history #neildegrassetyson #koko

"My first “mirror-selfie”. Circa 1973. Age 15. Honeywell-Pentax SP500, 55mm SMC-Takumar lens, bought with money earned from walking other people’s dogs. An SLR with removable lens allowed the camera body, with adapters, to swap with a telescope eyepiece, for taking pictures of the universe. And yes, that Afro was in style back then." #neildegrassetyson #selfie

So cool. The truck traveling 50mph shoots a ball in the opposite direction at 50mph, cancelling it out, making the ball drop straight down. #neildegrassetyson #mythbusters #physics

On this day in 1983, Dr. Sally Ride becomes the first American woman to travel into space aboard the shuttle. During the six-day mission, Ride, an astrophysicist from Stanford University, operated the shuttle’s robot arm, which she had helped design. Her historic journey was preceded almost 20 years to the day by cosmonaut Valentina V. Tereshkova of the Soviet Union, who on June 16, 1963, became the first woman ever to travel into space. The United States had screened a group of female pilots in 1959 and 1960 for possible astronaut training but later decided to restrict astronaut qualification to men. In 1978, NASA changed its policy and announced that it had approved six women to become the first female astronauts in the U.S. space program. The new astronauts were chosen out of some 3,000 original applicants. Among the six were Sally Ride and Shannon Lucid, who in 1996 set a new space endurance record for an American and a world endurance record for a woman during her 188-day sojourn on the Russian space station Mir. #NASA #SallyRide #Space #History #WomensHistory #Repost @history #neildegrassetyson
