Working as a double agent for the FBI and the Soviet Union, he helped to transfer money and information to the U.S. Government.
He was born into a Jewish family where they spoke Russian, which is how he came to learn to speak the language fluently. He also worked as a bootmaker and cobbler in Chicago.
He was a member of the Communist party, but was betrayed by them. He in turn helped deliver more than $28 million to the U.S. Communist party, of which, the FBI took a portion.
Before arriving at Ellis Island, his full name was Moishe Chilovsky. He married Eva Childs in 1962, a fellow FBI agent.
President Ronald Reagan awarded him with he Presidential Medal of Freedom for his dangerous work.
