American poet, novelist and editor. Her poetry collections include Other People's Comfort Keeps Me Up At Night, There are More Beautiful Things than Beyoncé, and Magical Negro. Magical Negro won the 2019 National Book Critics Circle Award. She is also the author of the young adult novel, Who Put This Song On. She is a member of The Other Black Girl Collective. In December of 2015 she was Poetry Foundation's featured blogger.
She was born and raised in Southern California. She completed her bachelor's degree in anthropology and creative writing at Columbia University. She got her MFA in poetry from New York University. Her debut collection, Other People's Comfort Keeps Me Up At Night, was published in 2015 but released in the UK and US in 2021.
She was an editor at Amazon Publishing's units Little A and Day One. She has taught creative writing at Columbia University and is the creator and host of Reparations, Live! in New York.
