During World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps, where he served as a pilot and aviation instructor. He published his first Mike Hammer novel in 1947.
In 1980, he was responsible for seven of the top 15 best-selling fiction titles in the United States.
He had four children with Mary Ann Spillane, and was also briefly married to singer Sherri Malinou. He wed Jane Rogers Johnson in October of 1983.
He received the Edgar Allan Poe Grand Master Award in 1995.
