Frind graduated from British Columbia Institute of Technology with a degree in Computer Systems Technology in 1999. He is the CEO and Founder of PlentyOfFish Media Inc. which includes the online dating site PlentyOfFish. The site is free to use and generates revenue through ads, as well as offering a premium service. He started focusing on PlentyOfFish full time in 2004. The website has appeared in music videos from Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Flo Rida, Akon, Jason Derulo, and Britney Spears. The company launched mobile apps in 2010 and as of 2013 more than two thirds of its users sign in from a mobile device. The site was hacked in 2011 and Frind has threatened legal action against those responsible.
In 2013 Frind made changes to the site, which focus more on meaningful relationships rather than hook-ups. Male users were no longer allowed to attach images to messages, and age differences were restricted. Fried previously worked at an online shopping mall and then bounced around at failing start-ups. He was unemployed for most of 2002. He didn't start POF to meet women, but to have something stable. He is hypersensitive to light and has trouble staring at a computer screen for long periods of time. In July 2015, Markus Frind sold PlentyOfFish to IAC for $575 million in cash. He never raised a round of financing and has no partners.
