Founded back in 1889 by Maria's great grandfather, SACI Falabella is now the largest retail company by market capitalization in Chile. The company saw a major growth in the 1930s, under the guidance of Alberto Solari who joined the business after he got married to a grandchild of the original founder. Solari expanded Falabella's range of work into clothing and housewares, as well as he brought in members of his family who helped the company grow further. Eventually, Falabella has turned into a Latin powerhouse that has more than 80,000 employees across Colombia, Peru, Chile and Argentina. Whereas the main control of the company falls in the hands of the Solari family, members of the del Rio Goudie family also hold major stakes. One of the low-profile players in the company, Maria Luisa was fined by Chilean authorities in 2008 for trading on privileged information in a failed 2007 merger.
