She was part of the first group of NASA astronauts to include women, and went on to have a successful career in space exploration. She flew on three Space Shuttle missions, and was the first woman to serve as a mission specialist. She also served as a flight surgeon and was the first woman to be a CAPCOM for a Space Shuttle mission.
